Welcome to the The Hackwood Building Estate page
In early 2020, we managed to buy some old documents from eBay. I tried to put these on Facebook with limited success, so I have now produced this page to home them all. These documents show a proposed land development from about 120 years ago. It shows land broken up into several plots. These plots are geographically situated in the Norn Hill area of Basingstoke. Curiously, none of this development came to pass as the plots and roads were never built. This is with the exception of the Reading Road, now Norn Hill, but this was an existing road.
The documents comprised of several folded pages, some were double-sided and some were not. The original order of the pages seems to have been mixed up, so I have done my best to put them in a coherent order. The last page contained a fold-out map, showing the plots for sale. A few interesting things I have noticed. Firstly, the triangular bit of land between the railway and the bottom of the plots has become Coronation Road. Secondly it looks like this map predates Queen Mary Avenue as it doesn’t line up at all with the building plan. Thirdly, the spelling of Lychpit seems to be Lickpit on the documents.
For the map, I have added an additional picture with an overlay of the modern road layout. Note that the maps don't line up exactly, but it should be good enough to check its modern location.
